Your neck, or your cervical spine, is comprised of a collection of nerves, bones, joints, and muscles. The neck has the important job of supporting the head and providing flexibility while the head is in motion. Nearly 80% of people have experienced neck pain in some form throughout their life. The causes can vary from having slept awkwardly, or from neck strain caused by looking down at your phone for hours. Whatever the cause, there is a solution for your neck pain. If you live in or around London, ON, contact Dr. Batte at Corrective Chiropractic to schedule a consultation to relieve your neck pain. Let’s looks at some stretches that you can do at home to find neck pain relief.
While sitting down, tilt your head down until your chin touches your chest. Stop and hold this pose for the count of five seconds. Return to the normal head position then gently and slowly extend your neck, or tilt it back, or look up at the sky, stretching your neck as you do so. Repeat doing a repetition of five.
Also called The Sternocleidomastoid Stretch, this neck exercise can be done either sitting or standing. Turn your neck to the right as far as you can get it. Next, tilt your head back, going towards your shoulder. You should instantly feel the stretch on the side of your neck. This is your sternocleidomastoid muscle. Try to hold this pose for thirty seconds. Repeat this action on the other side.
This can be done either sitting or standing. Make sure you are in a good posture as always. If you are sitting, keep one hand on your lap and drape the other hand around your head. Gently pull your head out to the side toward your shoulder until you feel the stretch. Hold for thirty seconds. Now switch with your other arm.
