What Are Some of the Causes of Neck Pain?

Neck pain occurs for many reasons. If you get into a car accident, you may experience neck pain as a result of being jostled in your seat during the impact. When the head and neck are violently thrust in one direction and then suddenly in another, it results in whiplash. Whiplash is sometimes not felt for days or weeks after the incident. Neck pain can also occur if you move your body in repetitive movements for a long duration of time. Having to stare at a computer, phone, or tablet screen in one position for hours at a time can also lead to neck pain. Remember, a series of minor injuries or large, will accumulate into a distortion of the vertebrae, causing inflammation of the nerves. This is called subluxation.

How Can Neck Pain Be Avoided?

If you routinely use a cell phone, set an alarm before you decide to look at it for a bit. When the alarm goes off, look upward and away from the screen for several seconds. This simple action will help you to move the muscles in the back of your neck, keeping them from becoming stretched unnecessarily for long stints of time.

When you sleep, do not use more than one pillow. This will keep your spine straight while you slumber instead of keeping it curved near the base of your neck. If you side sleep, don't curl your neck forward - this will have the same effect as multiple pillows. Instead of performing the repetitive tasks that involve the movement of your head and neck, break up these movements by taking frequent breaks. Getting up to walk around a bit and drinking some water are always helpful when trying to avoid pain.

How Can Neck Pain Be Treated?

Neck pain can be treated by applying warmth to the affected area. This will increase the blood flow in the area and promote healing. Remember to cool the area with ice after the heat to control any inflammation! Sometimes heat therapy is not enough, then, it is time to contact the professionals. Our chiropractor uses a variety of spinal adjustment techniques to reduce joint and nerve inflamation (subluxation), which in turn, increases blood flow and restores nerve supply throughout the neck muscles. This alleviates pain and discomfort to support the healing process.
