It is estimated that at least 577 million people around the world suffer from back pain. Back pain makes sleeping extremely difficult. Dr. Batte at Corrective Chiropractic in London, ON, would like to look at sleeping positions to help support your back.
The Mayo Clinic recommends that people with back pain sleep on their sides with both knees pulled comfortably up near the chest. Place a pillow between the legs. The use of a body pillow is optional. Side sleeping helps to take weight off of your back. You can also try sleeping in a fetal position, with your knees up as far as they can go while still being comfortable.
If side sleeping is too painful for you, you can sleep on your back but take some of the weight off of your back by placing a pillow under your knees. A rolled towel under the small of your back helps support your back.
Some people with chronic back pain that find it too painful to lie down in any position and resort to sleeping in a recliner. Sleeping sitting up partially helps take weight off of your back and your other joints. This does not eliminate your back pain but often reduces it enough so that you can at least get some sleep. This can also help people that have mobility issues and find that getting up from a lying position unaided is quite difficult.
It is time to sleep better by getting treatment for your back through chiropractic care. Many back conditions are caused by the spine pressing on the nerves. Chiropractors use a variety of therapies to help align the spine correctly, reduce pain, and provide relaxation. Some people get drowsy or even fall asleep during their treatments. We will work with you to improve your posture so that your spine can remain aligned between chiropractic adjustments. You will be shown exercises that you can do at home to help reduce your pain.
